Gardening is a hobby right?
Due to the fact that our soil is mostly sand; last fall we decided to build a few raised garden boxe's. And because we happen to enjoy seeing the deer frequent our yard, we also built a 20' x 30' enclosure for the garden boxes. Now being anxious to get planting, guess who foolishly started "seedling" cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and hubbard squash in the house. You guessed it! I believe the squash could crawl out to the garden on their own. They've really thrived well in our east patio window. Being we are in the Upper Peninsula and frost could still occur; I plan to "baby" them until at least Memorial day.
So we thought we would have plenty of room for everything until guess who started ordering seeds. Yup, I did it again ~ so we already set out tires for additional planting and extended the fencing around them. Not only that, we had a bit of space in the enclosure that we hand dug, removing the grass, adding mulch and ordering topsoil for another space about 4' x 20' planting area. I already transplanted some of my rhubarb plants into additional beds to make room for those sprawling Hubbard squash.
Ah, but what if you have a dry spell you might ask ... that too has already been planned for. We put rain gutters on our small garage this spring with two rain barrels set up behind it. And a closer-to-the-garden barrel is set up and collecting rainwater off the house.
And being a true optomist, I've already purchased additional canning jars.
As I'm writing this it occurs to me that we could buy a lot of canned vegetables for the money we've tossed into our new "hobby" BUT the rewards just aren't the same.

Sweet! That happened to me this year as well... No one needs 9 varieties of squash, but I bought the seeds & planted them anyway. Mel dawned me the 'Squash Lady' lol
You have some helpful & clever ideas for gardening. I'm so glad you're sharing them here. I know your garden will do really well. The rain barrel's are a great idea to plan ahead like that. I love your fence too.

Cher.. Great job on the garden beds and fencing. It looks great! Now all you need is to hire a couple of the neighbor kids to do your weeding. Good to hear you bought your canning jars for Thom. You did say they were for Thom ... right? Well... good job for him. I do all my canning now outside on my turkey cooker. No more steaming up the house. It works great.

GARENING? GREAT. I HAVE IT DOWN TO A SCIENCE! THE WEEDS WILL GET TALL ENOUGH AND THEN TIP OVER SO YOU CAN THEN SEE WHAT YOU PLANTED.
ALSO WHEN YOUR HUSBAND TELLS YOU HE WILL GET YOU SOME S___ FOR YOUR GARDEN--STOP HIM. I AM NOW UP TO MY ELBOWS IN THE STUFF AND IN MY GARDEN I AM ON MY HANDS AND KNEES ALOT SO YOU CAN FIGURE OUT FROM THAT WHERE THAT PUTS MY NOSE!! GOOD LUCK!
Loveit,loveit,loveit.......(is that a word)....your garden must have kept you busy today, dear sister, hoping we didn't just miss one another....
Your garden is inspiring...don't think I will get my raised beds this spring, however Hubby was looking yours over pretty close....
As for going overboard on the squash, with that much you easily might try throwing some on your compost heap and let them rip....the deer might take a chunk out of each one, but they will leave you plenty for harvesting...
Enjoy every second of your new 'hobby'....it is sooo rewarding
